The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every year for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month pause that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to deliver viewers with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the news, this may result in a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of creation, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Nowadays, anime production is structured in cours, with a couple at most releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
