European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Additional Updates in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
